James Appointed to Powerful House Appropriations Committee
Local lawmaker to serve on three other committees
HARRISBURG – Local residents will have a louder voice in the debate about state spending after state Rep. Lee James (R-Venango/Butler) recently was appointed to serve on the powerful and prestigious House Appropriations Committee. The committee plays a key role in developing the Commonwealth’s annual spending plan.

“I look forward to playing an even more active role in the state budget process,” James said. “We will review the governor’s budget proposal and then work to develop a fiscally responsible spending plan for the Commonwealth.”

Gov. Tom Wolf is scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 5, to deliver his annual budget address before a joint session of the state House and Senate in Harrisburg.

The House Appropriations Committee will then conduct hearings to review specific aspects of the governor’s proposal and also consider other options.

James also has been appointed to serve on the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, which plays an important role in overseeing and regulating the Commonwealth’s robust natural gas industry.

“We are blessed to have significant reserves of natural resources in the Commonwealth,” James said. “We want to make sure we harvest our natural resources in an economically beneficial and environmentally responsible manner.”

James, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1966-72, also has been appointed to serve on the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, which oversees issues related to military veterans as well as emergency response policies and procedures.

James also will serve on the House Local Government Committee, which handles legislation dealing with the Commonwealth’s patchwork of counties, cities, townships, boroughs and other municipal governments.

“I’m excited about my committee assignments and optimistic about the important work we’ll be doing during the next two years,” James said.
