James Invites Residents to Property Tax/Rent Rebate Clinics In Franklin and Oil City
2/28/2017
SENECA – State Rep. Lee James (R-Venango/Buter) is inviting local residents to join him at two local clinics – one in Franklin and the other in Oil City – where his office staff will help senior citizens and persons with disabilities fill out applications for a rebate of up to $650 on their property taxes or rent.

“We have had success with these tax rebate clinics in the past and hope people will take advantage of this opportunity again this year,” James said. “We look forward to working with local homeowners and renters in an effort to secure rebates available to them.”

James will host the first clinic on Thursday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Franklin VFW located at 411 Ninth St. He will host the second clinic on Thursday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Free Methodist Church, which is located at 206 Wilson Ave. in Oil City.

The state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program provides qualified applicants with rebates of up to $650 on their housing costs. Applicants must be Pennsylvania residents age 65 or older, a widow or widower age 50 or older, or a person with a permanent disability age 18 or older.

Eligibility income limits for homeowners are set at the following levels, excluding 50 percent of Social Security, Supplemental Security Income and Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits:

  • $0 to $8,000, maximum $650 rebate (homeowners and renters).
  • $8,001 to $15,000, maximum $500 rebate (homeowners and renters).
  • $15,001 to $18,000, maximum $300 rebate (homeowners only).
  • $18,001 to $35,000, maximum $250 rebate (homeowners only).
Applicants who submitted forms for the 2015 program year may already have received booklets in the mail.

Applicants should be prepared to prove their age by bringing a birth certificate, driver’s license, PennDOT identification card, PACE or PACENET card, or Medicare card.

Applicants should bring proof of the taxes or rent they paid in 2016. Receipted tax bills or a tax bill with a copy of the canceled check are required as proof of taxes that were paid. A rent certificate from the landlord or rent receipts signed by the landlord will be accepted to prove rent amounts paid by the applicant.

The clinics offer help on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We want to make sure as many people as reasonably possible have access to this information and are able to apply for this important program,” James said.

Applications are due by June 30.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program is one of five programs supported by the Pennsylvania Lottery. Since the program’s 1971 inception, qualified applicants have received more than $6.1 billion in property tax and rent relief. The rebate program also receives funding from slots gaming.
