Rep. James Comments on House Approval of Revenue Plan to Complete Funding of the State Budget without Tax Increases

The Pennsylvania House approved an amended state revenue plan on Wednesday that puts taxpayers first and does not require any increase in state taxes. The revenue plan authored by House Republicans is viewed as a financially responsible effort that not does not rely on additional state borrowing and calls for the utilization of existing funds in dormant state accounts to help balance the nearly $32 billion state budget. The amended revenue plan now returns to the Senate for consideration. Rep. Lee James (R-Venango/Butler) commented on passage of the legislation:

Penn Grade Crude Coalition released a report Tuesday in Harrisburg about the huge economic impact of the conventional oil and gas industry in the Commonwealth. Lawmakers and industry representatives praised the report as the first in-depth analysis of the full economic impact of the conventional shallow well drilling and production industry, founded in Pennsylvania more than 150 years ago. Rep. Lee James (R-Venango & Butler), a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Oil and Gas Caucus, attended the event and offered comments on the significance of the report.

Governor Tom Wolf delivered his annual budget address before a joint session of Pennsylvania’s House and Senate on Tuesday in Harrisburg. The Governor proposed a $32.3 billion spending plan with no new major taxes for the upcoming fiscal year. House Republicans were encouraged by the Governor’s decision to work with lawmakers to explore several cost-saving measures in order to balance the budget.

Legislation designed to ensure that thousands of the Commonwealth’s seasonal workers are eligible for unemployment compensation benefits was recently signed into law by Gov. Wolf in Harrisburg. Act 144 will also bring significant reform to the unemployment system, strengthening its solvency and bolstering its continued viability. Rep. Lee James (R-Venango & Butler) said this legislation will benefit seasonal workers and the companies that need to retain quality employees, as well as safeguard Pennsylvania against future economic instability.

House Approves Rep. James’ Unemployment Compensation Reform Legislation Sparked by Local Plant Closing

The state House this week approved unemployment compensation reform legislation aimed at helping displaced workers, like those who recently lost their jobs at the Joy Global Inc. plant in Franklin. Prime sponsor Rep. Lee James (R-Venango & Butler), said the bill would help to improve the state’s unemployment compensation system by extending the appeals period, giving workers and employers additional time to review and appeal decisions on an unemployment claim.

Rep. James Comments Following Local Hearing on the Growing Drug Epidemic in PA

Tackling Pennsylvania’s opioid crisis was the topic of a bipartisan hearing held Monday by state lawmakers in Venango County. The event was the beginning of an eight stop tour across the Commonwealth by members of both the House and Senate to gather testimony from experts about the growing drug epidemic and how it is impacting communities. At the conclusion of the tour, the House Policy Committee will make legislative and policy recommendations for the Legislature to consider when it reconvenes this fall for a special session on the opioid crisis. Rep. R. Lee James (R-Venango & Butler) hosted the event said state government is trying to get a handle on what resources need to be marshalled to provide adequate and timely treatment services for those who are suffering from this growing drug addiction crisis.
